I gone my computer unplugged for a year how did the date and time stay correct?

the date and time of ur computer is determined by counters inside the motherboard tat update themselves irrespective of whether the power is supplied to them or not. so when u unplug your comp, they dont get reset or stop and hence updation stays intact
