How would a 720p movie look on my 1440 x 900 monitor?

It will look fine as long as you get hold of the black space above and below the picture. If it fills your peak from side-to-side and top-to-bottom something is wrong. Either the images will be distorted or parts of the picture are person cut off on both sides.
